CEDAR FALLS – The NU High and Jesup basketball teams split a pair of games Tuesday at Nielsen Fieldhouse.
The J-Hawk girls’ team used a clamping defense and a second-half surge to pull away from the hosts in the opener, 51-32.
Later, the Class 1A No. 1-ranked Little Panther boys’ team steamrolled the visitors in the night cap, 98-35, as they scored at least 20 points in each quarter.
The Panther girls (5-10) had kept pace with the J-Hawks (10-2) through the first 16 minutes of game one. They led 15-14 after the first period, and then Morgan Granger’s three free throws when time expired tied the game at 22 going into the locker rooms.
However, a 13-6 third-quarter advantage for the J-Hawks set the tone for the remainder of the game.
For the game, the Panthers turned the ball over a total of 21 times, while the J-Hawks lost possession 18 times.
NU coach Joe Smeins said his team had trouble rebounding in the final 16 minutes.
“They had a lot of offensive rebounds, and I thought we missed a few lay-ups in the second half,” Smeins said. “That game might have been a bit different [if they were made].”
Kelley Klein led all scorers with 25 points on eight field goals and 9-for-10 from the stripe.
Schneider scored nine points for the Panthers, including two three-pointers in the first quarter. Granger led NU on the night with 12 points, including 5-for-7 from the free-throw line and an off-balance three-pointer in the fourth quarter.
In the boys’ game, the top-ranked Panthers (14-0) hit the accelerator on both ends of the floor early and didn’t let up until six minutes and eight seconds remaining in the contest. Even then, the Panthers’ JV players were able to keep the intensity up to close the game.
NU blasted Jesup in the opening eight minutes, 23-7, with a steady diet of Eddie Diemer put-backs supplemented by Tanner Cooke treys. Diemer had a team-high 19 points The momentum continued in the second frame, as they held the J-Hawks to just four points.
AJ Jones took over the scoring pace in the third with nine of his 18 points, while Kyle Denning hit on a pair of shots from behind the arc.
The majority of the fourth quarter featured the line-up of Andrew Stone, Christian Ford, Eric Hines, Tommy Amlie and Jawanzaa Holmes. Stone did play much of the rest of the game, tallying 11 points.
Hines led the late-game reserves with five points, while Holmes notched four, to the delight of the student section.
Panther coach Paul Elser said after the game his team came to play basketball Tuesday after a rough game at Dike-New Hartford last Saturday.
“We had a lull, like the mid-season lull, and we weren’t getting it done on defense,” Elser said. “We talked about how we needed to get it done with five guys, not four, five guys that will pay attention and help out the others on defense.”
