The NU High golf team competing at the North Iowa Cedar League Tournament included Will Rector, Kasey Jackson, Joe Weber, Jalen Bergman, Emmett Fritz and Jesse Bankston.
DENVER – NU High golfers Jalen Bergman and Joe Weber earned medalist and runner-up honors at the NICL Tournament Monday, held at Willow Run Golf Course.

Host team Denver won the league meet, with a team score of 320, ending NU’s two-year run of championships in 2008 and 2009. The Panthers finished third at 349, ahead of five other teams.

Bergman carded a three-over-par 73 in cold, extremely windy and rainy conditions. Weber’s 76 was second, while Denver’s tandem of Blaze Shedenhelm (77) and John Sexton (79) were the only other players to break 80.

Bergman and Weber led the all-NICL conference team, which also included Denver’s Shedenhelm, Sexton, Chase Shedenhelm, and Austin Burrow, Union’s Justin Macal and Michale Walters and Wapsie Valley’s Brandon Niebuhr.

“The conditions were as tough as we played all year,” said NU coach Lee Weber. "When we started it was very windy…it progressed to incredibly windy, and then finally ended with rain and high winds.”

This was Bergman’s second NICL Conference championship. He also was the conference medalist in 2008 at Jesup. This was his fourth consecutive all-NICL conference performance.

Weber continued his outstanding performance in major tournaments, taking home his second runner-up medal to go along with two first place medals. Weber has three straight all-conference performances. The pair of golfers are both on track to finish in the top 10 in many career categories in the NU record book.

NU also posted a 93 from Emmett Fritz and a 107 from Jesse Bankston.
